That goes for fishing as well. Hooking Chinook Salmon (King Salmon) or Coho Salmon (Silver Salmon) is a challenging but exhilarating experience. Get ready to land a big one, because your chances are good. Expect a fight because these are big fish and the big ones usually put up a battle. Landing some of these big guys can be a lot of fun; almost as much fun as grilling them that night as the hero of the day.

Of course, the captain will provide all you need to catch the big one including poles, lures, and gear. An experienced fisherman will be by your side to help you net your prize and make sure he gets into the boat.

How the Fishing Trip Goes

Your Sitka Alaska day often begins as the captain motors the vessel away from Baranof Island. This is where Cascade Creek Lodge sits on the outer coast of Alaska’s Inside Passage. Both experienced and novice fishermen will enjoy this fishing trip. Soon fishermen will have their lines baited and in the water. Usually, the fishermen don’t have to wait long before their lines are bowed with the struggling salmon and the fight is on.

 

The captain, one of the Kraft Family, is there to coach the fisherman on how to keep the struggle going without losing the prize. Reeling him in takes time and effort. Often after being reeled in close to the boat, the salmon will find new strength and pull the line out once more. This is where the fisherman must find his strength or get help from others and continue the fight.

Usually, the fisherman gets the salmon close to the boat where the captain or experienced fisherman can net the fish and securely bring it aboard. Often the salmon is still thrashing when brought aboard but quickly loses steam. All fish are bleed immediately upon landing, and the salmon are gutted and gilled prior to being thrown into the ice filled cooler to keep it as fresh as possible.

Salmon Fishing in Sitka, Alaska

The two most popular fishing techniques used to catch salmon are mooching and trolling. Both are very effective, but are quite different in their methods.

 

If you are interested in the most hands-on method of fishing in Alaska, mooching for salmon would be it! While utilizing the mooching method, all anglers fish for salmon with their own rod and reels; and can continue fishing even when another angler has one on the line! This method is more effective when large schools of salmon are in the area, as anglers work their baits up and down the water column.

 

Trolling with electric downriggers is another effective way to catch salmon. This method is most effective when the salmon fishing is slower or you have less anglers on board. A lot of lodges around Sitka effectively fish for salmon using both methods, but not many have the option to do both.

 

At Cascade Creek Lodge, we give the guests the option to do either. And if one method isn't working to the group's or captain's expectations, we always have the option to try the other.

Sights of Sitka Alaska

Sitka is located in Southeast Alaska. While you are waiting to hook your first, or tenth, fish, stay alert for sights that are extremely rare in the lower 48 states but more common in Sitka, Alaska. You might see otters tumbling playfully around in their natural habitat.

 

More obvious sights are the waterspouts from whales. These giants are frequent sights in waters around Sitka, although the deep water is their true home. Being mammals, of course, they need to surface to gulp some air.

Many of these species can remain below the surface for approximately 90 minutes before needing to surface and can dive 2,000 yards below the surface.

Historic Sitka Alaska

As you return to shore with your catch, take in the sights around historic Sitka. The historic city is accessible only by boat or airplane. The city was established in 1799 by Russian Americans and was the site of the official handoff from Russia to America in 1867. Alaska officially became a state in 1959.
