Sitka, AK Fishing Report: Silver Salmon Fishing (July 29 - August 14)

Updated: Mar 3, 2020

Silver (Coho) salmon: Silvers were slow to end July and for the first week of August. No great reason as to why. But the best theory is that it's an overall "medium" year on Silvers, and the commercial fishery fished all of July for them. The Silvers started to heat up during the second week of August, with limits or close to limits (6 per person) on most days. It's not as "hot" as 2018 but it's still a good year to come up and fish! Everyday is different but we should expect 10-20 Silver salmon on most days for the remainder of the summer. We still have some openings for the end of August. Check out our late season specials!

King (Chinook) Salmon: Not sure if anyone is going to believe this but the King salmon fishing is opening again for nonresidents! Beginning August 16, nonresidents can now keep 1 King salmon per day (1 annually). Have we been catching? Yes! Last week we had a day where we released 10 King salmon. Most days we have been releasing 3-6 King salmon per day, mostly fishing above 150 feet of water trying to avoid them. One of which was estimated to be 35 pounds.

Halibut: A great year for halibut! Read last month's post on how good the halibut fishing has been.

Blackcod (Sablefish): Without a super hot Silver salmon bite, we haven't been able to get out to the deep water much lately. Learn more about Black Cod and why you need to catch one for yourself.

Lingcod: We have been catching a lot more of these this year, but they need to be 30-35 inches or over 55 inches to retain them for non-residents. Delicious!!!

Summary: A great summer of fishing thus far. There's a little more motivation knowing that we can now target the best fish in the ocean- King salmon! Only a few weeks left. Hope to see you all in 2020.
