August & Early September Sitka, Alaska Fishing Report

A very strong August and early September fishing for salmon, halibut, lingcod, and black cod in Sitka, Alaska. King salmon remained strong until about the last week of August, with historic limits. Silver (Coho) salmon started to grow 1-2 pounds per week. Halibut stayed hungry throughout August. The black cod were plentiful if the wind cooperated and the group wanted to leave the salmon grounds.

Historic limits of King salmon! Beginning August 1st, the non-resident limit increased to 3 per person/day with a 9 annual limit. Most likely something we will never experience again for the month of August and early September. Some days it feels like this limit was achievable, other days not so much. Overall a great month and week of King salmon fishing, but don't count on limits being like this next year.

August is prime time for Silver (Coho) salmon fishing. Growing up to 1-2 pounds per week on average. Not as good as summer 2018, but still a solid August.

Hungry and quality halibut throughout the whole season. It's always easy to say it keeps getting better by the day, but wow, I think it kept better! Unless the ocean was too crazy, Cape Edgecumbe had some of the best and quickest halibut fishing I have ever experienced.
