Sitka, Alaska Fishing Report June 2021

King Salmon Fishing

June is known as the month for the best King salmon fishing in Alaska and Sitka did not disappoint in 2021. Strong numbers up and down the coast with good catch rates of King salmon for the boats. Cape Edgecumbe was the hot spot in May and that continued for the first week of June. That bite slowed considerable as of late, and the boats have been traveling to the hot spots around Pt Amelia for better fishing.

New regulation update for King salmon effective June 21.

Alaska Resident:

  • Two king salmon per day

Nonresident:

  • One king salmon per day

  • January 1 - June 30: total harvest limit is three king salmon

  • July 1 through July 7: total harvest limit is two king salmon

  • July 8 through December 31: total harvest limit is one king salmon

Halibut Fishing

Another great summer of halibut fishing thus far. It's been mostly quick and good sizes when the ocean cooperates (not too windy). We've been fishing in various depths with good success, with 300-400 ft being good off Cape Edgecumbe and 700 ft at other spots off Kruzof Island. The benefit of fishing in deeper water (700 ft) is some great bycatch of bonus fish such as the black cod (Sablefish).
