King Salmon Fishing 2019 Recap | What to Expect in 2020
Updated: Mar 3, 2020
2019 Recap: The King salmon started showing up in late April in strong numbers and got even better in May. This is the best early run of King salmon we have had in a few years with limits (1 per person per day, 3 annually for non-residents until July 1) expected on most days in May. We offer discounted fishing packages in May and June 1-10 due to the King salmon fishing not being as consistent as mid June and beyond. Guests who booked one of these early season trips got rewarded with some excellent King salmon catching.
2019 Peak: It's hard to say for sure since the fish & game report isn't out yet for '19, but for us the fastest limits were found on most days in mid June (June 10-25). We found limits or close to limits on most days in June if the weather was half decent.
When's the best time to catch Kings? We catch wild feeder King salmon in Sitka, AK. The largest schools are found in May and June, with June being the best month. Over the last 5 years, the highest catch rates of King salmon on average were found during the week of 6/18-6/24 according to ADF&G. Learn more about the best month to fish Sitka, AK.
What about July & August? We still catch King salmon during this time but typically the limit changes to 1 per person per day (1 annually for '19). In July, we start to see the transition from King salmon schools to Silver salmon schools.
2020 Forecast: Every year is different but after a slower 2018 and good 2019, it appears we are on the upswing of King salmon fishing - the most exciting fish to catch in the Pacific Ocean!
